6 Great German Shepherd Names For This Beautiful Family Dog

The excitement of someone new always has the house in a bubbly state. You have to make a few changes in order to accommodate the newcomer. Whether it is moving furniture, giving up closet space or adjusting the menu, it is always a new and interesting experience. Getting a dog is no different. It is still as thrilling, and understandably so. Especially when that dog is a German Shepherd.

German Shepherd Dogs, or GSDs as they are commonly referred to, are big, highly intelligent and very responsible dogs. They are very fast in responding to training and obeying commands. They are also very highly dependent and are almost always the number one option when looking for guide dogs. German Shepherds can also be very calm and caring and to top it all off, they are super protective over their family members. So, when you do get one of your own, giving him or her a name can be a pretty nerve wrecking job.

Below is a list of six German Shepherd names, three male and three female, which may just point you to the right name for your new baby. Although there are hundreds of other names you can choose from, these six are our favorites.

Male German Shepherd names

1. Apollo

If you are a mythology fan, then you know Apollo to be the name of one of the most powerful, popular and celebrated Greek gods. He was the god of numerous aspects including music, medicine, poetry and light. He was also the son of Zeus, the ultimate Greek god.

Apollo is not only a historically popular name, it is also very macho and demands respect by itself. Naming your German Shepherd Dog Apollo would be beneficial in many ways. Have you heard the speculation that most people grow into the meanings of their names? It is no different for pets. Dogs tend to grow into the characters that their names depicts.

Of course he won’t start throwing lightning bolts all over the house or command the sun to shine a bit brighter (although that would be very cool), he will still pick some traits from it. For example, such a powerful name will allow your dog be more confident, less frightened and extremely responsible. It will also make him feel appreciated and like part of the family therefore allowing him to settle right in.

2. Baloo

Baloo was/is a character in the all-time favorite Disney tale, The Jungle Book. He was a big bear who seemed scary on the outside but in fact he was very gentle, caring and fun to be around. He was also very protective of the boy Mougly. Baloo would be a great name to name your German Shepherd especially if you got him while big.

Like Baloo, most GSDs appear to be extremely frightening on the outside and if you are new to them, you may want to keep a distance from them. However with time, once you get to get used to each other, you may amazed at just how gentle, kind and affectionate these big dogs are.

They enjoy human company and once they accept you as family, they will be absolutely mindful of you. They are sure to guard you with their lives, literally. You may also find that if you have a new baby in the house and you introduce your dog to the child, the dog instinctively knows to keep them safe and will often be found lying next to the baby, making sure no harm comes to them. Just like a good dog!

3. Rocky

Rocky has to be among the top ten most loved dog names. Whether you get your GSD as a pup or grown, you will be able to notice some of its characters almost immediately. You may notice that he is shy and quiet, or just a ball of energy that cannot seem to keep still. He may like playing and running around, and just so happens to be very cheeky and mischievous. Rocky fits these kind of dogs just fine.

Dogs named Rocky love the outdoors. Their tongues are always hanging out as they run around playing with imaginary balls and sticks. They somehow are always able to make you laugh and when you are having a rough day, they just may be exactly what you need to be cheered up.

That does not mean they are not capable to be serious and responsible. On the contrary, they are very loyal and make the best companions. Rocky’s also enjoy hunting and chasing after squirrels just for the fun of it. But of course there are exceptions to every norm.

Female German Shepherd names

4. Amber

Amber is an alternative name for orange. In everyday life, the color amber is seen on our traffic lights which tells us to wait. Amber is also the color of most sunsets as the day changes to night. Amber can therefore be referred to as the color of transition.

Amber as a name can mean patient, hopeful, or a sign of change. Amber is a simple yet very beautiful name for your girl GSD. If you will have her as a companion, or a caregiver, you may consider calling her Amber.

Amber is calm, not too cheeky, mature, and compassionate. Amber is also very beautiful and seems to enjoy baths because she likes staying clean. Amber also seems to be disciplined and neat, doing things only when told to. Amber seems to be the name of a dog who would not touch her food, no matter how hungry, until you give her a go ahead.

5. Iris

Iris is a powerful name, just like its counterpart Apollo. Iris is also derived from Greek mythology where Iris was the goddess of the sky, seas and the rainbow. She was known to travel with the speed of wind and was also a trusted messenger of the gods to human beings. Naming your baby girl dog Iris is therefore a very noble choice.

Just like her predecessor, Iris may end up being the bridge way between you and the dog world. I kid. But not about it being a great name. Not only is it short and easy to pronounce, it is also very unique and you won’t end up calling three different dogs in the dog park as not many will have this outstanding name.

6. Queen

Last but not least, is the name Queen. This one does not need too much marketing as it speaks for itself. Queen is not royal, it is also very elegant. Naming your dog Queen lets her know that she is wanted and loved. She gets to feel very important and it may even help her warm over to the new house and family faster. Although you may think dogs do not understand what we say, it has been proven that dogs can sense energy in a room and respond accordingly. Queen sure does send out great energy don’t you think? Just be careful not to spoil her too much.
